Sedation

Sedation is the use of medication during dental treatment to help minimize pain and reduce anxiety.  This allows for a more comfortable and relaxing patient experience, even for those who suffer from dental anxiety.  In order to better care for our patients, Great Oaks Dental is pleased to offer sedation as part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan.

Patients may choose sedation for their dental treatment for many reasons, some of which include:

  • to provide a gentle, calming experience that can help overcome dental anxiety or dental phobia,
  • to increase the effectiveness of local anesthesia (numbing medicine),
  • to reduce the sensation of passing time, which can be beneficial during complex procedures or multiple procedures done in a single appointment, and
  • to prevent muscles from stiffening or becoming sore due to spending extended periods of time in one position.

Dr. Thrailkill and Dr. Pennington are experienced providers of sedation, having undergone rigorous training to ensure that each patient they treat is kept safe and comfortable. Everyone undergoing a dental procedure with sedation is thoroughly examined, both prior to and during the procedure, and is monitored continuously with state-of-the-art equipment.

While it is true that dental procedures can generally be done without sedation, our doctors have found that many patients are greatly aided by the use of sedation as part of a comprehensive dental treatment plan.
